Unveiling Italy’s Hidden History with Carmine Vittoria

In this episode, Carmine Victoria shares his fascinating journey from Italy to America, his extensive scientific career, and his compelling historical fiction books that explore Italy’s history and the Silk Road. Discover insights into Italian roots, WWII internment camps, and the mysteries of the Silk Road.

“A Silk Road Odyssey”

What would you risk to reclaim your freedom and your humanity after a decade in a frozen hell?

In A Silk Road Odyssey, acclaimed author Carmine Vittoria brings to life the harrowing, true-to-history story of two Italian soldiers captured after the Battle of Stalingrad and sent to a brutal Soviet Gulag. With the unlikely help of a Ukrainian soldier, they endured cruelty, starvation, and despair before daring an audacious escape through the ancient trade routes of Central Asia, the same Silk Road once traveled by Marco Polo.

Blending historical research with vivid storytelling, Vittoria reveals the courage, endurance, and friendship that sustain men in the darkest corners of war. From the icy wastelands of Siberia to the sun-scorched deserts of Asia, this gripping saga captures both the horrors of captivity and the unbreakable will to survive.

A tribute to the thousands of Italian prisoners of war forgotten by history, A Silk Road Odyssey reminds us that freedom is never free and that memory is the only victory time cannot erase.

If you are drawn to epic stories of survival, courage, and hope against impossible odds, open these pages and experience a journey you will never forget.

Carmine Vittoria received his Ph.D. in applied quantum physics from Yale University in 1970. He is currently a professor at Northeastern University, where he has established a world-class research laboratory focused on developing new microwave films deposited at the atomic scale. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and IEEE. He has uncovered many true, but little-known, poignant stories from World War II and written about them in his prior historical novels: Hidden in Plain Sight and A Tale of Two Enclaves.
