Italian Genealogy Update

So it’s been 1 year since I started the Italian Genealogy Blog and Facebook page.   I’d like to thank the over 85,000 visitors to this blog and I hope that I have been able to give people some good insight into how to research their Italian Family.  I am planning an ancestral trip to ancestral regions in Italy and with the help of Italy Rooting I’ll be seeking out distant cousins, going to ancestral homes and hopefully find a few surprise.  I’ll document the planning as I go along, so stay engaged by joining the email list or the Facebook Group.

For now here are some of the most popular posts from the past year

Here are some great books to consider if you are just beginning.

Italian Food — What are the origins?

We all know that Italian Food is the best in the world, but have you ever wondered where it came from.  As both a trained chef and a avid genealogist I’ll help to shed some light, and even a few recipes.  I’m sure that most of you growing up loved the smell of the Italian Food cooking on a Sunday morning.  Depending on what part of the US you come from, there was always a

Photos of Italian Brides

I do hope that you enjoy these photos of Italian brides ( and grooms ).  Some of these my mom had, some are from my first cousins, some however,  are from a long lost cousin that I found through ancestry research.  Amazing that she, through her grandmother, had photos of my aunts and uncles.   Please share. My True Ancestry New Update – Five Star Review

I felt that I had to do at least one more post and give a My True Ancestry New Update.  Rarely would I do this for one company, but they give such an enormous amount of data, and roll out new data and features rapidly.  I won’t go into great detail on how to sign up here, you can list the first to posts to get that information. One of the great things about My

History of Campania Italy

I have been researching the history of Campania Italy for over ten years as this is one of the two regions that my family comes from. Both of my father’s parents are from Naples, and I have traced my grandmother’s family back centuries.  I’ve been their once and hope to go back again soon.  Both of my grand mother’s families are listed in the Nobilita Napolitana.  The Caracciolo’s and Piromallo’s lived on or near Via

DNA Comparison

I thought it would make sense to do a DNA comparison across the companies where I sent my data.  I did two tests, Living DNA and Ancestry.com.  I have also sent my data to My Heritage and GED Match.  I may one day try the test at 23 and Me.  You can Hyperlink to any of these sites, to see their deals.  So far I have found that Living DNA gives the best data, and

History of Calabria Italy

Little did I know, that when I began my family research, that I would have ancestors from Calabria.  The Piromallo family was originally from Barcelona, Spain and eventually move to Naples.  The “capostipite” or founder of the family was Count Domenico Piromallo, who died heroically, as commander of the Castle of Crotone in 1528.  There’s not too much history to be found on the family until Francesco Antonio purchased Barony of Montebello in 1755 from

Best Italian Surname Search

Best Italian Surname Search is an update from a our previous post from March 3.  Updated with some new information.  I attempted to find mostly free ones, but a couple may ask for sign up. This is a really cool site as it gives the origin for your name, also variations and popularity in the US — Behind the Name This is a pretty neat one as it shows the map of Italy with the

Authentic Italian Family Recipes

I did a post on the origins of Italian Food.  In that post I included two Authentic Italian Family Recipes.  The Nicoletti recipe for pizza dolce and the Sorrentino recipe for tomato sauce from Naples.  That post turned out to be such a big hit that I decided to dedicate a page for recipes. These are handed down recipes, with one or two exceptions.  Besides being a genealogy blogger, I am also a trained chef

Italian DNA – Haplogroups

Having received great feedback on my post Italian DNA — Where Do We Come From?  I thought I would go a little deeper into Haplogroups.  Very simple put, a Haplogroup is a marker of sorts that denotes a certain mutation at a certain time in history.  This marker allows genealogists to more or less pinpoint a migration path.  Males inherit this marker from both parents, while females only their mother.   Knowing your haplogroup allows
