From Ancestral Palazzos to €8 Feasts: Our Unforgettable First Day in Naples

Returning to Roots in Naples: Ancestral Palazzos, Sacred History & an Unforgettable €8 Lunch

There is a unique kind of electricity in the air when you touch down in Naples early in the morning. The city wakes up with a roar—scooters zooming through narrow stone alleys, the scent of espresso drifting from open cafe doors, and history echoing off every wall. But for me, this trip wasn’t just a vacation; it was a homecoming.

Stepping Into History: Palazzo Caracciolo

Our very first night was set to be truly special: we were staying at an ancestral palazzo on Via Carbonara, now home to the Palazzo Caracciolo Naples. Knowing that my own ancestors once walked these grounds made every step through the grand entrance feel surreal. Since check-in wasn’t until 3:00 PM, we dropped our bags and hit the pavement running, ready to soak in every second. We wandered into the historic heart of the city, heading toward the awe-inspiring Duomo and the bustling, famous street of Spaccanapoli.

The highlight of our morning walk, though, was a quiet, deeply personal moment: a quick stop at the church where my great-grandmother was baptized. Standing before the font where my family’s story unfolded decades ago was a powerful, full-circle moment I’ll never forget.

The Ultimate Local Find: Lunch like a True Neapolitan

After spending the morning taking in centuries of history, we headed back to the hotel for a quick breather before our stomachs started reminding us it was lunch time. We asked the hotel concierge for an authentic, no-frills local spot. Without hesitation, he pointed us toward Trattoria paninoteca pizzeria B&B mamm e figl (a cozy local favorite known as Trattoria da Mamma), just a quick 10-minute walk down Via Carbonara.

“It’s where the locals go,” he promised. And boy, was he right.

What a find! We were treated to an authentic, three-course Feast of Naples—antipasto, primo, and contorno—for a mind-blowing €8.

I ordered:

  • Eggplant Parmigiana: Rich, savory, and cooked to perfection.

  • Gnocchi: Pillow-soft and tossed in a vibrant tomato sauce.

  • Meatballs: Two massive, melt-in-your-mouth polpette.

If you ever find yourself anywhere near Via Carbonara, trust me—do not skip this place!

What’s Next?

What an unforgettable start to the journey. Tomorrow, the real magic continues: we’re meeting up with our cousins and connecting with the rest of our group to continue exploring our roots.

History of Naples Italy with Vintage Photos

I have seen a lot of people that whose ancestors are from Naples, or Italy in general wondering why they have a percentage of Greek, Spanish, Arabic or other non-Italian segments.  DNA segments can potentially go back 10 generations.  I’m not a DNA nerd, but I certainly welcome any comments that any one may have to give simple explanations.  I have also seen people post that I know where I came from and I’m 100%

My Naples Experience

Click here to join out Facebook group During my two week vacation in Italy, a majority of the first week was spent in Naples where I stayed for 6 days. One of the things that surprised me was how Naples bore a similar resemblance to New York City except with less skyscrapers and older buildings. The district of Naples that I was staying in was the historical district of Naples and the churches in Naples
